Shorten gaps and dead air
Trim long pauses between sentences. Pick Tighter, Normal or Looser, or type your own pause lengths.
How it works
Shorten Gaps finds pauses longer than a threshold and trims them down to a target length. You choose how aggressive it is with three presets.
| Preset | Pauses longer than | Trimmed to |
|---|---|---|
| Tighter | 0.35 s | 0.1 s |
| Normal | 1.0 s | 0.5 s |
| Looser | 2.0 s | 0.75 s |
Click either number to type your own, then click Shorten All to apply it, or the scissors on a single gap. The same setting appears in the Shorten Gaps panel and in the Auto Edit settings, so changing one changes the other.

Which preset to choose
- Tighter: fast, punchy talking-head or Shorts content
- Normal: tutorials and courses, with natural breathing room
- Looser: slow, thoughtful delivery where you only want the long dead stretches gone
Pauses under about a quarter of a second are the normal rhythm of speech. CueClip does not let you trim below that, so you never cut into words.
Questions
Does Shorten Gaps cut my words?
No. It only shortens the silence between sentences.
Shorten Gaps found nothing on a noisy recording.
Constant background noise can make pauses look like speech. Run Background Noise Removal first, then Shorten Gaps.
